First, update HEN. It got a whole lot more stable than this version. Second, dont activate HEN immediately after turning on the console. If you have a slim console, wait for the HDD LED activity to stop blinking before activating HEN. On a super slim is a bit harder because it lacks the hard drive activity indicator, but you can count to 10
On full CFW you can play them off the network (AFAIK and that's the way I wish I could). I have a 500GB PS3 SuperSlim with HEN and pretty much can do everything else - as long as you have an activated PSN account before you run HEN (some games require the signing key from an activated account I believe). I think that can be circumvented in CFW. 1.
