Guild Wars 2 crafting is discovery based and you level at least twice as fast using the discovery system. My next step is usually to make enough components to begin the discovery process. In the case of leveling Armorsmith, that means I will need to make some insignias.
Leveling up in PvP is fine, but there's really no hurry to level up anyways. The lower level content in this game is really strong, particularly compared to most MMOs and you can still do a lot before level cap. This is especially true if you are focused on PvP, where your level doesn't really matter anyways.

In the mean time, just equip whatever you loot and once you reach lvl 80, grab exotic Berserker's (Power, Precision, Ferocity) armor and weapons off the trading post. The gradually level up your crafting as you get more mats. There are guides that will allow you to get a maximum of crafting experience for the least money possible.
